Period & Historic Reproductions

We are trained in many of the bookbinding styles and structures used in centuries past. These bindings range from early 3rd century codices, to medieval wooden board Byzantine and Coptic bindings—to 17th German and 18th century French bindings. And we can handle more recent structures as well.

In replicating or restoring period bindings, we use the highest quality leathers including alum thawed pigskin, goatskin, sheep, calf and hand prepared vellums and parchments. We maintain a stock of handmade and conservation papers, period reproduction marbled papers, linen, cording, cloths. We can even use period-correct adhesives if you would like. For patinas and aging effects, we use conservation dyes and colorants. If your binding project requires gold tooling, we have hundreds of rare antique finishing tools that can be used to replicate the tooling on books. If you appreciate period bindings, we would be happy to craft one for you, just give us a call.
